FRANCE: Boisset to export Beaujolais Nouveau in PET

Tag: Länder,Regionensigi.hiss @ 17:07

One of France’s principal wine producers will export its 2008 Beaujolais Nouveau in plastic bottles for the first time this year. Boisset, one of the top five French exporters of premium wines, is aiming to send at least 100,000 bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau – about the same as was sent in glass last year – in PET to the US, Canada and Japan.

The move to PET is mainly due to environmental and transport cost concerns, but glass bottle supply problems are also a factor.

„The main reason is environmental, reducing CO2, but we will also see a colossal saving on transport costs as it mainly goes by plane,“ said Antoine Pirie, Boisset’s export director.

The plastic bottles weigh 60g, compared to 400g for glass. Pirie also noted that glass bottle price increases – about 10% in the last 18 months – and supply problems were being „kept in mind“.
