EU: Commission to reform Geographical Indications system

Keith Nuthall – EU drinks firms have been asked whether they could abandon their separate geographical indication systems for spirits and wines. These registers could be combined with the existing protected list for foods, suggests a new European Commission green paper devised to overhaul quality labelling schemes.EU agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said drinks manufacturers „have to provide products with qualities consumers want, guarantee these qualities and…communicate them effectively.“ The EU’s registers of protected designation of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI) for wines, and the PDO-only register for spirits, contain classic names such as Champagne, Bordeaux and Scotch.

The green paper said maintaining three registers involved too many administrative complexities: „There are procedural and other differences based on specific requirements,“ it said.
