Bordeaux’s en primeur campaign in doubt

Tag: Länder,Regionensigi.hiss @ 16:52

by Sophie Kevany – Members of the Bordeaux wine industry are questioning the wisdom of holding the annual primeur, or futures, campaign next year, given current economic circumstances.

„It is too soon to tell, no one can say what the economy will be like in June 2009, but if conditions are catastrophic, then maybe we should ask ourselves if we should do it,“ said Thomas Duroux, director of Château Palmer in the Medoc.

Duroux added however that the 2008 wines had not been blended or tasted yet, so it was too soon to talk of cancellation. Bordeaux merchants say there are expecting the campaign to be ‘delicate‘, with perhaps a limited number of wines on offer at hopefully pragmatic prices. „There will be a campaign of course, there has never not been one since it started, it may be limited to the top 30 brands, however, instead of the normal 100 to 140,“ said wine merchant Jean Luc Thunevin.

„What negociants are dreaming of is premier cru classé wines like Lafite and Mouton coming out at less than €100,“ Thunevin said optimistically. „I believe these châteaux have a responsibility [to price sensibly],“ he said. Bordeaux’s wine futures system relies on buyers paying in advance for wines that will not be ready for drinking for anything up to 40 years.
