VDP Wine Auction results 2009

Tag: Allgemeines,Weingütersigi.hiss @ 14:44

During the last weekend of September, hundreds of wine devotees made their way to Trier, Kloster Eberbach and Bad Kreuznach to participate in the annual auctions held by the VDP, or Prädikat Wine Estates – formerly known as the estates that auctioned “natural wines.” The auctions, a tradition practiced by the VDP since the 19th century, are a benchmark in assessing the potential and/or appreciation in value of members’ wines.

Impressive Results

The final fall of the hammer marked the end of hours of haggling during which brokers vied with one another to fetch the best results for their customers. During the next few weeks, wine estates will be shipping their finest wines of new and/or mature vintages all over the world. This year a total of 12,000 bottles came under the hammer. The proceeds are valued at a remarkable 706,000 Euros, or an average of ca. 58 Euros per bottle – much to the delight of VDP growers. Smaller harvests in recent years account for the smaller quantity of wines auctioned in the Mosel region. Continue reading „VDP Wine Auction results 2009“

US geologists challenge ‚gout de terroir‘

Tag: Allgemeines,Oenologiesigi.hiss @ 11:26

James Lawrence –  Scientists in Oregon are challenging the notion that terroir can be detected in a wine.  As part of a study into vineyard soils, geologists meeting in Portland for this year’s Geological Society of America conference concluded that the French gout de terroir – translated literally as ‚taste of the soil‘ – probably isn’t caused by minerals found in the vineyard. The Losh Cause – South Africa’s wine marketing misses a beat?

Tag: Ländersigi.hiss @ 18:15

Chris Losh –    A fortnight ago, Wines of South Africa held its biennial tasting event for the country’s wine producers in London. At the show, the trade body unveiled its latest marketing tool: ‚DNA SA – a Brand Blueprint for South African Wine‘. Will this approach help the nation steal greater share from its competitors? Chris Losh looks for holes.  I’ve not been out to The Cape for a few years, so it was good to be able to take stock of how South Africa is coming along at its big ‚Mega Tasting‘ in London earlier this month. New California AVA: world’s smallest?

Tag: Ländersigi.hiss @ 12:18

David Furer –  The United States is soon to have the distinction of hosting the worlds largest and smallest appellations.  California’s Happy Canyon is the latest American Viticultural Area (AVA) to be recognised by the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB).  And its 225ha of vines distributed amongst eight vineyards, only six of which produce wine in commercial quantities, makes it one of the smallest appellations in the world. Grange set for Hong Kong auction

Tag: Reife Weinesigi.hiss @ 11:20

Chris Snow in Adelaide –  Two complete sets of Penfolds Grange are to be auctioned on 5 November in Hong Kong.  A pre-auction estimate of up to HK$1.85m (AUS $260,000) has been set for a Grange vertical from 1951 to 2004 750 ml bottles.  A complete set of magnums from 1974-2004 is expected to fetch up to HK$430,000 (AUS $60,000).  Auctioneer Nick Bulleid MW said the set of magnums was ‚very rare‘ because only 600 magnums of 1979 were ever produced.

Eamonn Egan, managing director of Sydney-based cellar managment company Cellar Link, said the estimates were higher than recent auction results because Hong Kong was ‚a much bigger market – so there’s more liquidity.‘  ‚The locals seem intent on owning the must-haves of the wine world, a vertical of Penfolds Grange being one of them,‘ he said.  Egan said the two-lot auction was being auctioned to mark the opening of Cellar Link’s Hong office.  Cellar link also has offices in London and San Francisco.

California to liberalise wine laws

Tag: Allgemeines,Regionensigi.hiss @ 11:17

James Lawrence –  The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has approved a bill intended to liberalise the state’s wine laws.  Sponsored by the Wine Institute, the law will allow winemakers to sell their wines in licensed venues away from the winery.  The bill will also allow customers to take home unfinished bottles.  The change is highly significant for local winemakers, as more and more wineries are opening tasting rooms and winery-owned bars, particularly in cities.

Together with the Brazilian entrepreneur Bernardo Weinert he started Bodega y Cavas de Weinert. He also served, among other professional roles, as managing and technical director of Weinert Winery. There he created the legendary Weinert Malbec Estrella 1977, considered by many the best Malbec ever made in Argentina. De la Mota also left his signature and his distinctive style on Finca Flichman, where he was creator of their wine Caballero de la Cepa, and he transformed the Patagonian wines of Humberto Canale winery. At the age of 88 he made his own blend for Ruca Malen winery.

2002 Bordeaux by Steven Spurrier

Tag: Regionensigi.hiss @ 12:47

All I recall of summer 2002 was that it was rained off. A closer look, thanks to Clive Coates’s The Wines of Bordeaux, shows that it was not so much rainy as cold and that the vintage was rescued at the last minute, as was 1978, by an almost perfect Indian summer from mid-September through early October. But even this could not alter the effects of a catastrophic flowering towards the end of May, which caused much of the right bank Merlots to be lost. Americans Drink More Wine—Mostly Bigger Brands

Tag: Allgemeines,Ländersigi.hiss @ 07:29

Looking for value in a recession, Americans trade down to less-expensive wines. In spite of the current recession, Americans are on pace to drink more wine in 2009 than ever before, with consumption expected to eke out a 0.6 percent increase this year, the 16th consecutive annual gain. The weak economy has slowed wine-industry growth considerably, as shrinking disposable incomes dampen overall alcohol consumption, particularly in restaurants, bars and other on-premise outlets, according to the upcoming U.S. Wine Market: Impact Databank Review and Forecast, 2009 Edition. But as the global economy improves, wine-industry growth is also expected to gradually build momentum. Continue reading „Americans Drink More Wine—Mostly Bigger Brands“

New vineyard pest detected in Napa County

Tag: Regionensigi.hiss @ 07:24

The moth, Lobesia botrana, can feed on the flower or the fruit of the grapevine. If the pest attacks mature grape clusters, the berries can become further damaged through infection of botrytis, also known as bunch rot.

By ROBERT DIGITALE – THE PRESS DEMOCRAT: A new exotic pest, the European grapevine moth, is damaging grape clusters in the Napa Valley, raising concern among farmers and sparking a hunt to learn the extent of the infestation.

The moth larvae found in an Oakville-area vineyard is the first known infestation in the United States, officials announced Monday. As a result, agricultural inspectors are setting out traps in both Napa and Sonoma counties. Continue reading „New vineyard pest detected in Napa County“

Lasers to overtake manual sorting in hi-tech Bordeaux

Tag: Oenologie,Regionen,Weingütersigi.hiss @ 10:20

Jane Anson in Bordeaux, and Panos Kakaviatos –  Manual sorting tables will soon be a thing of the past as the top chateaux embrace €100,000 laser sorting technology.  New sorting machines, using laser optics, have been introduced at Chateau Pavie and Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne, and Chateau Margaux has an entirely new gravity-led reception system for the grapes, taking them first in small trays and then by a pulley system into the vats.
