Vega Sicilia to move into Rioja?

Tag: Weingütersigi.hiss @ 17:15

Patricia Langton – Vega Sicilia has set its sights on Rioja, buying vineyards in the north of the region, according to local reports. Local newspaper Diario La Rioja has reported that Vega, considered one of Spain’s finest producers and the star of Ribera del Duero, is believed to have been acquiring parcels of old vineyards in the area around San Vicente de la Sonsierra, part of Rioja’s ‚golden mile‘ and located between the renowned wine towns of Haro and Laguardia.

Over 40 small growers have left the San Vicente de la Sonsierra co-operative over the last two years. Most sold their vineyards – generally mature low-yielding properties with stony soils – last year. A company callled Plalia Inversiones, which is linked to Vega Sicilia, has bought 80-100ha of vineyards – all of them meeting a similar brief.

Speculation has mounted in recent weeks following sightings of key figures from the winery including oenologist Javier Ausás and agricultural engineer Enrique Macías Gómez as the project seems to gather pace.

They are believed to have made wine from the 2009 vintage at a rented winery facility at Lezas near Laguardia. Vega Sicilia has been owned by the Alvarez Díaz family since 1982 and is headed up by Pablo Alvarez. The Grupo Vega Sicilia portfolio also includes Bodegas Alión (Ribera del Duero), Bodegas Pintia (Toro) and Tokay Oremus in Hungary, which were all established or acquired in the 1990s.

Chris Mercer – The CEO of New Zealand Winegrowers has said he is confident that winemakers have begun to drain a surplus that threatened to devalue the country’s wine industry.

A smaller grape harvest in 2010 has helped New Zealand to regain some balance between supply and demand, Philip Gregan told just-drinks at the London International Wine Fair today (19 May). Continue reading „NZ: New Zealand Winegrowers upbeat on supply glut“

Bordeaux 2009: Prices rising above 2005

Tag: Regionensigi.hiss @ 10:18

Bordeaux 2009 By Jane Anson in Bordeaux – As more Bordeaux chateaux put their 2009 wines onto the en primeur market, many are showing price rises to above their 2005 levels. Duhart Milon was released yesterday up 72% on 2008 (€22), and up 46% on 2005, continuing the price rise trend on 2005 seen from the majority of releases so far.

Chateau Gazin in Pomerol came out last week at €45 (per bottle) ex-Bordeaux merchants, a rise of 56% on 2008 (€28.8) and 41% on 2005 (€32) – a price that was dismissed as ‚ridiculous‘ by UK wine merchant Nick Stephens. Chateau Fourcas Hosten came out at €7 this year, up from €5.7 in 2005, while Denis Dubourdieu’s Clos Floridene was at €9, up from €7.50 in 2005 (but unchanged from 2008) and Chateau d’Agassac at €8.75 this year, compared to €8.5 in 2005.
