Decanter: Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck for sale

Tag: Weingütersigi.hiss @ 21:27

by Richard Woodard- French drinks group Rémy Cointreau has put its Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck Piper-Heidsieck Champagne brands up for sale in a deal which could raise as much as €450m.

The news has provoked intense speculation over who will acquire the brands, with Diageo and Pernod Ricard named as possible bidders – although analysts believe a private equity group is the most likely buyer.

The company has commissioned Crédit Agricole-CIB to begin the sale process by inviting bids after growing impatient with its Champagne business’s inability to turn a profit.

It is understood that Piper has never been profitable in the 20 years that Rémy Cointreau has owned it, in stark contrast to the money-making power of the company’s Rémy Martin Cognac business.

Piper president Anne-Charlotte Amory has spent the past few years trying to turn the business around, achieving a 10-12% EBIT (earnings before income tax) margin in the year to March 2008 – before seeing that wiped out by the economic downturn.

Sales dropped to 6.9m bottles in the year to March 2010 – of which Piper accounted for 5.6m and Charles 0.8m bottles.

Cost-cutting measures have included the announcement of 45 job losses – one quarter of the workforce – in February this year, which prompted strike action at the company’s headquarters on Continue reading „Decanter: Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck for sale“

New St Emilion classification approved

Tag: Regionensigi.hiss @ 20:54

by Jane Anson in Bordeaux- After four years of drama, confusion and near-farce, a new St Emilion classification will St Emilioncome into effect from the 2012 harvest.

The French appellations body, the INAO, has finally approved the new regulations, almost exactly four years since the 2006 classification collapsed into a legal morass.

The classified wines of Saint Emilion are the only ones in the world to submit to a 10-year classification, where chateaux are revised upwards and downwards depending on quality.

Following rancorous disputes over the 2006 classification – brought by chateaux that had lost their status – the system has been in limbo. Continue reading „New St Emilion classification approved“

just-drinks.com editorial team – Click through to see the new packaging for Champagne Gosset

Champagne Gosset has lined up a global revamp of the packaging for its namesake Champagne brand.

The company confirmed earlier this week that it „has modernised its packaging and labels to bring the brand into line with latest ecological concerns, demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainable development“.

While colour-coded labels and boxes will be introduced, the bottle shape will remain the same, Gosset said. „The antique-style Gosset bottle … is still being used for the new-look Grande Réserve, Grand Rosé and Grand Millésime, with red, pink and green coloured livery respectively,“ the company said.

The new look is being introduced globally as each market takes delivery of new stock.
