Two of Australia’s best-known wine brands, Penfolds and Jacob’s Creek, swept the board at the latest Great Australian Red competition, taking all five trophies between them. In the fifth annual taste-off devoted solely to Australian blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, Jacob’s Creek Johann Shiraz Cabernet 2005 was awarded the overall accolade of Great Australian Red 2010, and also won the trophy for the best Shiraz-dominant blend.

The wine is no stranger to success in the awards, having scooped trophy, gold or silver medals in each year of the competition so far.

Penfolds Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2008, a special bin wine not due for release until 2012, won the trophies for the best Cabernet-dominant blend and for the best wine over A$50.

Meanwhile, Penfolds Koonunga Hill Seventy Six Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (pictured) took the trophy for the best wine under A$20, making the brand the competition’s most successful entrant, with all its wines winning medals.

Four gold medals were awarded – three to the eventual trophy winners, and one other to Yalumba FDR1A 2008 – along with 26 silvers and 29 bronzes.

Competition organisers Tyson Stelzer and Matthew Jukes hailed the increasing quality of wines entering the competition, with a higher proportion of gold and silver medals awarded than ever before.

The biggest rise in quality, they added, was seen among the lower price levels, with almost one-fifth of sub-A$20 entries winning gold and silver medals.

Jukes and Stelzer said the results were all the more remarkable, given that three-quarters of the entries came from the ‘challenging’ 2007, 2008 and 2009 harvests. www.decanter.com
