VDP: Weinbörse on 26/27 April 2015 in the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz

176 Wine estates provide a comprehensive vintage overview

Mainz | This year marks the 42nd time that the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) will conduct the Mainzer Weinbörse, the world’s largest international trade fair for top-quality German wines. Some 176 VDP member estates will provide a comprehensive overview of the 2014 vintage as well as their current portfolios. Their collections include wines that reflect the VDP’s four-tier classification pyramid and its nomenclature: VDP.GUTSWEIN • VDP.ORTSWEIN • VDP.ERSTE LAGE • VDP.GROSSE LAGE. In all, members are showing 1,358 wines, primarily from vintage 2014. Of these wines, about half are Rieslings. Although 2014 was a challenging year, particularly during the harvest, VDP president Steffen Christmann states: “In Mainz, we’re presenting a vintage that ideally complements its predecessors. With their moderate fruit acidity, underpinned by fine mineral notes and fruit, these are ‘wines of origin’ par excellence. Really something to look forward to.”

In addition to the usual measures undertaken to reduce yields and promote crop health, 2014 was a year that required a particularly quick and selective harvest. Very wet conditions in some regions’ vineyards and variable weather fostered the onset of rot at an early stage. This could only be only be held in check by intensive manual labor. In general, the size of the crop harvested was nearly normal compared with the somewhat smaller quantity of vintage 2013. Yet, “normal” is a relative term. With their focus on quality rather than quantity, VDP members voluntarily reduce yields to well below the maximum permitted by law.

The VDP.Weinbörse is open to members of the trade and press only.

Sunday and Monday, 26 and 27 April, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The VDP.Prädikatsweingüter is the world’s oldest and only national association of top-quality wine estates. From the vineyard to the cellar, VDP members voluntarily adhere to stringent, in-house quality standards. The four-tier VDP classification pyramid adopted in 2012 – VDP.GUTSWEIN, VDP.ORTSWEIN, VDP.ERSTE LAGE, and VDP.GROSSE LAGE – underscores the significance of origin as the basis of wine quality. The “VDP eagle,” a stylized eagle bearing a cluster of grapes, is mandatory on capsules and stands for terroir-driven viticulture and handcrafted winemaking.
