Exceptional qualities at the 18th Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI

After a grand total of 39 Grand Gold, 960 Gold and 1,064 Silver medals were awarded, the spring tasting of the Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI came to a close. Held in late February 2016, MUNDUS VINI brought together a 160-member strong international jury, which spent four days tasting and evaluating wines from 150 vineyards throughout the world. By the end, Italy had taken first place in the medal tables (500 medals), replacing Spain, which came in second with 470 medals. Next up was Portugal (265), followed by Germany (226) and France (191).

The New World also showed strongly with Chile in the lead on 56 medals, followed by Australia (52), South Africa (29) and New Zealand (20). Notably, wines from Eastern Europe also showed strongly, with Bulgaria on 29, Hungary at 12, Georgia with 11 and Romania with 10.

The highest number of Grand Gold medals went to Spain (12), Portugal (9) and Italy (6); Germany, France, Australia, the USA and Hungary took home two each, while Austria and Israel were each awarded one.

Another 68 Special Awards were given out to exceptional wines, including the Best of Show Champagne for the 2000 Alfred Gratien Vintage and Best of Show Brunello di Montalcino for the 2010 Riserva Jacopo Biondi Santi from Montalcino.

The winners of the spring tasting will be presented at MUNDUS VINI tasting zone at ProWein, the world’s largest wine trade fair, held in Düsseldorf from 13 to 15 March 2016. The winners of the Special Awards will also be honoured at a prestigious award ceremony on the first day of the exhibition, when members of the MUNDUS VINI board will personally present the certificates.

The traditional MUNDUS VINI summer tasting will be held at the beginning of September 2016, to allow wines from vintage 2015, which were not yet in bottle by February 2016, to be tasted.

MUNDUS VINI was founded 15 years ago by Meininger Verlag and rapidly become one of the most significant wine competitions in the world.
