Codice Citra, a reference for wine in Abruzzo, will participate in the international event ProWein (March 20-22, 2017) with numerous new wines. Within the stand dedicated to Codice Citra (HALL 16 Stand A12) each day will be dedicated to one of the products or the wine lines of the company: Ferzo, a dedicated Horeca line, Chichibio, the biovegan wine and Hortāri, the classic method sparkling line.

The company from Abruzzo, founded in 1973, unites nine cooperatives in the province of Chieti. It is the largest wine production reality of Abruzzo, which combines technology, control and expertise of a large company to the quality and characteristics of the traditional work of 3,000 wine makers who cultivate 6,000 hectares of vineyards.

Here’s the schedule of the tastings at ProWein:

March 19th, at 1 pm – Presentation and tasting of Hōrtari, the new line of sparkling wines “metodo classico”, realized in the context of a research and development program for production of bubble wines with Abruzzo grapes launched by Codice Citra in 2014 (in-depth info box 2).

March 20th, at 1 pm – Presentation and tasting of the wines of Ferzo line, destined to channel, that includes Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Cerasuolo, Cococciola, Pecorino and Passerina (in-depth info box 1). By Lino Olivastri / Rino Santeusanio and Fabio Piccoli.

March 21st, at 1 pm – Presentation and tasting of Chichibio, the biovegan wine line (in-depth info box 3). „ProWein in Düsseldorf is, undoubtedly, the most important wine fair in Europe. – Valentino Di Campli, president Codice Citra says – Every year we can face with the largest European wine producers and, on this occasion, bring all our news. This year we will present Hōrtari, sparkling Metodo Classico wines made from indigenous grapes, the wines Biovegan „Chichibio“, and finally, the Ferzo wines, an exclusive line grouping five high-quality references: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Cerasuolo, Cococciola, Pecorino and Passerina, born from the union of the top rated Abruzzo wine regions represented in a single label”.


The Horeca line grouping Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Cerasuolo, Cococciola, Pecorino and Passerina. The combination of the top Abruzzo wine areas represented in a single label devoted to Hotel Restaurants and Catering channel. This is Ferzo, an exclusive wine line grouping five high-quality references: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Cerasuolo, Cococciola, Pecorino and Passerina. In the name the destiny of this line is enclosed: bring together the best wine production of Abruzzo. Ferzo in the local dialect is a piece of cloth sewn together with other pieces forming a large sail, symbol of the line, stamped on the label.

Codice Citra’s 3,000 winegrowers in fact work on a vast territory, which includes almost all the province of Chieti and extends from north to south for about 80-90 Km and from within-land 40 km from the Adriatic Sea. This is the main added value of the company from Ortona: it groups different terroirs and microclimates, with unique features that produce high quality grapes with different chemical and aromatic characteristics.

The launch of the new Ferzo line is part of the strategy of enhancing native vines, the key for the development of the regional wine industry that has all the qualities to compete at the level of the other Italian winemaking realities. Ferzo line is devoted to Horeca channel, and includes five references.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOP, a soft and harmonious wine, structured, with intensity of aromas. Ideal pairing, red meat and game.

Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOP, obtained from the vinification in white of grapes of Montepulciano, has a freshness that brings out notes of cherry and almond and due to its acidity is excellent as an entire meal wine.

Cococciola Abruzzo Superiore DOP is a wine with a delicate taste, smooth and fruity with an enveloping fragrance. Full flavor, good texture, long finish and floral nose, with notes of acacia and balsamic hints of sage.

Pecorino Abruzzo Superiore DOP, is a structured wine, good persistence with mineral notes, tropical fruit aromas, making it pleasant and engaging. The perfect pairing with seafood.

Passerina Abruzzo Superiore DOP, a fresh and fragrant wine, with complex and fascinating smell sensations so as to make it surprisingly persistent.


The Classic Method Sparkling Line „Hortāri“ is a new line of Classic Method Sparkling Wines, created within a research project in the field of bubbles by Codice Citra, launched in 2014, which led to obtain new sparkling wines, ready for consumption, particularly suitable for the whole meal.

The project – Codice Citra has promoted together with the University of Teramo and the Research Centre C.Ri.VEA, a research and development project to enhance Abruzzo DOP, and consider the different attitudes depending on the crop varieties and techniques of wine-making methods. The initiative was inspired by a growing demand of the market, especially among young people, who demonstrate a strong interest in natural wines and sparkling wines of native grapes.

Varieties – After years of experiments and consumer tests native cultivars like Pecorino, Montonico and Montepulciano revealed the greatest potential for sparkling wines through the re-fermentation in the bottle. Moreover among the types of sparkling wines accepted by „Abruzzo DOP“ denomination in relation of sugar residual, currently the only type provided is Brut, with sugar less than 12 grams per liter of wine. The aging on the lees, albeit partial, shows no sign of interesting results regarding body, structure and olfactory notes. In view of the organoleptic results, a stop on the lees for a minimum period of 36 months (that become 48 if you mention the thousandth, or the vintage year, on the label), as required by the specification for Abruzzo DOP, seems too much: after just nine months after the second fermentation the characteristics of their respective grape varieties are clearly perceived, in harmony with the typical notes of the classic method.

The wines – Maximum expression of the line is “Hortāri”- Classic Method Sparkling Brut Nature Montonico 2014, which represents a laboratory in bottles at 360 °. In winemaking terms it was a real challenge to focus on indigenous grapes with fermentation „nature“ in 12 months. In terms of marketing and communication, this new classic method sparkling wine, also called „social sparkling classic method“, is suitable for all consumers who love bubbles: it is easy to drink, to be enjoyed throughout the meal.



The biovegan line directed to MMR Chichibio is the biovegan wines line the banner of environmental sustainability, able to enhance the characteristics of native grapes such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo and Pecorino, that strengthen their bond with the territory in collaboration with the National park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, to whom a part of total net sales will be given.

Created by the selection of the best cru produced by the more than 6000 hectares of vineyards spread over a territory that goes from the sea to the mountain slopes, the new biovegan wines from Citra retain all the features of conventional wines, but they are made by processes that exclude the ‚use of any material of animal origin, respecting the vegan dictates and getting the biovegan certification. Produced with organic grapes, the Chichibio line is designed for the market of mass retailers and to represent this line is the Crane, the international symbol of peace, happiness and long life.

The added value is the development of an eco-friendly packaging made from reusable materials in all its parts: a bottle Burgundy, produced in lightweight, recyclable glass that allows less waste production and CO2 savings emitted into the atmosphere; the recyclable capsule, made of rigid, extruded, oriented and non-toxic PET; the label produced on uncoated paper; the first cork from wine in the world with no carbon footprint (NORMACORC Select BIO with Plantcorc  technology); cardboard made from recycled paper.

Chichibio underlines the company’s desire to move towards a marketing 3.0, „experiential marketing”, where the focus is on the customer and his consumption experience, always trying to unite the soul to theproduct, that means the set of values where consumers are able to identify with. Chichibio is also a way to renew the close link between Codice Citra and Abruzzo, reinforced by the partnership with the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. Through its biovegan wines, the winery of Ortona will support the projects of the Park which will be paid a percentage of total net sales.
