ProWein 2013: WINES OF PORTUGAL erstmals in Halle 2

Tag: Ländersigi.hiss @ 12:19

Spannendes Programm & internationale Referenten

Continue reading „ProWein 2013: WINES OF PORTUGAL erstmals in Halle 2“

decanter.com: AIV Debate – Can biodynamic unlock ’noble‘ wines?

Tag: Länder,Oenologiesigi.hiss @ 10:38

by Chris Mercer – Greater respect for the soil is key to producing wines that accurately express terroir and may be considered ’noble‘, a meeting of the Academie du Vin has been told.AIV 2012 debate Paul Draper of Ridge Vineyards addresses AIV members in London.

Raymond Paccot, of Domaine La Colombe in Switzerland, said that biodynamic winemakers represent a ‚resistance‘ movement. They are at the forefront of efforts to improve expressions of terroir by rejecting 20th Century cultivation methods.
The concept of biodynamic, and also organic practices more broadly, were recurring themes during the Academie du Vin (AIV) debate, which was held under the title, ‚is noble wine a valid concept?‘.

‚Through the use of herbicides and water soluble fertilisers, many vineyards have suffered,‘ Paccot said during a speech at the AIV conference, held at London’s Cavendish Hotel and co-hosted by Decanter. ‚We are emerging from a time when it was thought possible to replace culture and knowledge with simplistic products and techniques,‘ Paccot said. Österreich Glasweise: „Cool Wines by the Glass “

by Beverley Blanning MW – Organics and screwcaps could be the way forward for Chateau Margaux, according to new research by the Bordeaux first growth.1855 Chateaux

The estate’s managing director and winemaker, Paul Pontallier, claimed that organic farming was the future direction for Margaux. ‘We are very close to organic farming. I think it’s a matter of a couple of years,’ he said at a London seminar.Pontallier presented 16 wines at the event, including wines produced using alternative farming methods. The organic and biodynamic examples rated more highly than those conventionally farmed among trade members.

Margaux also unveiled its experiments with alternative wine closures on the estate’s second wine, Pavillon Rouge. ‘We’ve all been disappointed and frustrated by corked bottles. Another closure would be welcome if it is better,‘ he said. While trials on synthetic corks were ‘absolutely catastrophic,‘ screwcaps fared better.

A 2003 red wine sealed with an impermeable screwcap closure was preferred to the same wine sealed with a cork or a permeable screwcap at yesterday’s event. Pontallier revealed that this was consistent with tests at the estate. ‚If we have consistent proof that it works better, I don’t see how we could resist,‘ said Pontallier on moving to screwcaps.

The same test on a 2004 white wine from the property drew a less conclusive result from both the audience and Pontallier, who preferred natural cork. ‘It’s very difficult to draw conclusions and every time we do these experiments, we don’t agree. Or if we agree it’s on things we don’t expect to agree on,’ he added.

decanter.com: Consumers across three continents prefer lower alcohol wines – Prowein

Tag: Allgemeines,Ländersigi.hiss @ 14:43

by Adam Lechmere – The alcohol content of wine is the major priority of wine drinkers across three continents, new research shows.prowein

In research commissioned by German wine trade fair Prowein, analysts Wine Intelligence canvassed 1000 regular wine drinkers in the US, China, Germany and the UK. Significant minorities in each country said their ideal wine would have less than 12% alcohol. In China this was most noticeable, with 91% of drinkers saying their desired level would be 8.5-10.5% by volume. In Britain, 22% said their ideal wine was 10.5% or less, with similar numbers in Germany and the US saying the same.

The preference for lower alcohol is most marked in the younger generation. In China the survey found that women, and those aged 18-39, were more likely to say their preferred level of alcohol was 5.5-8%

A similar demographic was found in Britain, with 27% of the 18-39 age group saying their preferred strength was 10.5% or less. Continue reading „decanter.com: Consumers across three continents prefer lower alcohol wines – Prowein“

Bernard MadoffThe consignment had been estimated at US$15,000-21,000. The majority of the lots sold above their high estimates.

‘The proceeds from this auction are going towards compensating Madoff’s victims, so we couldn’t be happier with the results,’ said auction director Kimberly Janis. The buyers pay an 18% premium, which Morrell keeps.

Bernard Madoff is serving a 150-year sentence for running an investment scheme that was the biggest fraud in Wall Street history.
